Yoto Player – First Look Review

To inform his review, the journalist Jack Turner tested the Yoto Player with two children aged four and six. The piece describes how the children were initially ‘intrigued’ by the player and enjoyed selecting the first audio card to listen to. The Yoto Player was so popular with the two children that when bedtime came around they both wanted to take it to sleep with them! The review from the children concluded with the observation that, at bedtime, ‘the 4-year-old favours the audio books, while the six-year-old enjoys listening to the sound effects card which plays noises to help you sleep.’

The journalist praises the Yoto Player’s ‘retro’ design, highlighting its tactile features that appeal to children: ‘for kids, the welcoming, large orange buttons are hard to resist twiddling with.’ The piece also highlights how the simplicity of its functions make the Yoto Player ‘so easy that a child could do it, which is, of course, the point.’ Moving on to discuss the content available, the journalist highlights the control the audio cards give the children over their listening: ‘The main selling point is having them on a physical ‘thing’ – this might seem something of a relic to parents who remember cassettes and CDs, but it’s a novelty for young listeners to have full autonomy over these products.’
