Creator Q&A

Tell us about yourself

Hi, we’re the Mik Maks…aka The McInnes family. Consisting of brothers Joel and Al McInnes, Joel’s daughter Ava and ‘Drums the Panda' as the main performers. Joel and Al are both professional educators and Ava is in her final year of school. Music and early education have always been a passion for our family as we grew up and worked on our sheep farm in rural Australia.

The Mik Maks are a trusted brand in children's music and we’ve been performing live shows for the past 12 years. We love nothing more than loading up our Gig Bus and hitting the road to take our music and shows to young families all across Australia.

Due to the incredible success of our YouTube channel, The Mik Maks are now adored by children all over the world. Did you know that our educational content has been streamed over 8 billion times and has amassed 8.7 million YouTube subscribers. We love helping young minds across the globe develop, learn and grow. However, it's a responsibility we take very seriously.

What inspired you to make this title(s)?

We draw our inspiration to create from many places, including our own children, performing regularly for our young audiences and as professional educators. Parents constantly tell us what their children love and connect with. Our Yoto Cards are a carefully chosen collection of our most engaging songs according to what our young fans love. We take pride that our catchy songs are educational, purposeful and relatable for young families.

Who do you imagine listening to your audio?

Our songs are perfect for young families with children aged 2-8 years of age. However, our tunes also provide listening enjoyment for both the young and young at heart. Perfect for car trips, play dates, parties or wind down time before sleep.

Is there anything different about making audio for Yoto?

What a great question! Yes, creating music for Yoto is a little different from our usual music and video content. With Yoto, we really narrow our focus on the listening experience. Kids don't have the visual cues they have on streaming devices, so we put extra care into the sounds, voices and music to spark kids' imaginations.

What’s next?

Ssshhhh........we're already busy creating our next adventure for a new and exciting Yoto card. Our first releases have been such a fun way for us to connect with our fans and we can't wait to share our fresh new Yoto cards. Families can definitely expect a few new surprises that we think kids (and parents) will love.

Creator FAQs

    Who are the Creators?

Our Creators are independent makers of music and spoken word content for children and families. Some have established audiences in other places, while others are beginning their audio publishing journey with Yoto. We put out a public call to join this initiative at the start of 2024.

Each of our creators have their own Creator Profiles where you can read more about them and their cards. Just click on their name on their card store page to find out more.

How can I become a Creator?

If you are just starting out, you might first choose to share your digital content for free in the Open Mic section of our community site Yoto Space, where you can start building an audience and get feedback from friendly enthusiasts.

Learn how to make a great Yoto Card by reading our Yoto Creator Guidelines. Learn about what makes the Yoto format unique, and how to create a really engaging and successful title that children will love.

If you're ready to start selling your content on Yoto, you can register your interest.

Can I learn more about Creator content before purchasing?

Yes, each card has an extended audio preview so you can listen to a representative sample before making a purchase. You can also read more about a card's creator by clicking on their name on the card page.

How is this different from the free audio on Yoto Space?

Open Mic on Yoto Space is where we nurture those creators who may be just starting out or wanting to experiment with a new title. It's a friendly community where they have space to share content for free, build an audience and get feedback. We are delighted to see several creators make the leap from there to become Creators on the Yoto Store, where they can now monetise their work.

What do I do if I don't like a card that I've purchased?

If it simply isn't to your taste, purchases are covered by our usual returns policy. If you believe a title breaks our Creators Content Guidelines, please report it.

Are more Creators cards being added to the collection?

Yes, more titles and more creators will be added over the coming months.
